Rules worth knowing before you start
VAT
- Up to €10,000 a year of distance sales within the EU you can charge your own VAT.
- Above that you charge the customer's VAT: 23% in Slovakia, 21% in Czechia.
- One OSS registration covers the whole EU.
- Switzerland is outside the EU, so different VAT and customs rules apply.
Consumer law
- Information and documents for Slovak consumers in Slovak.
- 14 days to withdraw from an online purchase.
- Slovakia: a clear withdrawal function on the website since 19 June 2026.
- Czechia is preparing the same rule.
Packaging, electronics or batteries can need a registration in each country. We are not tax advisors or lawyers: VAT and registrations go through your advisor, and we build the store so it fits what they decide.

Questions about selling in Slovakia and Czechia
Do I need a company in Slovakia or Czechia?
An online store from another EU country can sell there from its own company. Up to €10,000 a year of distance sales within the EU you charge your own VAT, above that the customer's VAT through OSS. Packaging, electronics or batteries can need registrations in each country, so check the details with your tax advisor.
Is one language enough for both countries?
No. Consumer information has to be in Slovak in Slovakia and in Czech in Czechia. The languages are close, but the store needs two versions.
Can I keep Shopify Payments?
Yes, if your company is in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland or Hungary, and customers can pay in Czech crowns. Payouts in CZK are only on the Advanced and Plus plans. On the other plans Shopify converts the money to your currency.
Which delivery do customers want?
Pick-up points and parcel boxes. In Slovakia 47% of regular online shoppers use pick-up points and 37% parcel boxes, in Czechia 52% and 47%. Packeta alone has more than 6,000 Z-BOX parcel boxes in Czechia.
Is Seznam worth it?
In Czechia Seznam had 13.1% of searches in October 2026 (StatCounter), so its Sklik ads can make sense there. In Slovakia it is below 1%, so Google is enough.
How much does it cost?
It depends on your store, the number of products and the apps you use. You get a fixed price in the proposal after a free 30-minute call.
